I am James Arthur Bradbury, but not the same one that created this great website. There are some interesting similarities. I have been reviewing and enjoying this site for a number of years in great detail but so far have not seen any connections with my family records. I would really like to hear from the Jim that created this site as we seem to have so much in common.

My sister Ruth Louise(b.1931 and I (b.1933) were both born in El Paso TX. Louise married James Edward Inskeep in San Diego in 1951. I married Mary Lou Sewell in San Diego in 1963. We have 3 children (Debra Lynn, 1964, Susan Diane, 1966, and James Michael,1968.) All were born in New Jersey. We moved back to California in 1981. All were married in San Diego. Debbie now lives in Hood River, Oregon and has 3 kids (2 boys and a girl). Susan now lives in Tecumseh Michigan and has 2 boys. Mike has 1 daughter so we have a total of 6 grandchildren.

My Grandfather was Walter Bradbury, the 3rd son and 4th child of Robert and Louisa Bradbury. He was born in Birkenhead, County of Chester England on July 19,1854. He came to the USA in 1875 thru the Port of New Orleans in 1875. His father Robert was probably born circa 1822 and probably married circa 1847. I do not know Louisa's maiden name. I believe Robert's father's name was Arthur but I don't remember his wife's name. I have an old picture of them. The family activities seem to be centered around water and Liverpool in the 1800's.

Robert operated steamboats on the Mercy River in the 1800's. I have some pictures of one of his boats and his Boathouse. An old letter states that the Prince had taken a trip on one of the boats. There is also a picture of my Grandfather's brother Arthur's racing yacht taken in the 1890's.

Walter's siblings were Arthur, born about 1848, Harold and/ or possibly Robert born 1850, Louise born about 1852 and Elizabeth born about 1856. Neither sons Robert nor Harold appear in a family picture taken around 1874 but there are references to them in other correspondence. I believe the family consisted of a total of 4 boys and 2 girls.

Arthur married Nelly Buckley and they had a son Archie (probably Arthur) about 1880. Louise had married William Horsfall before the 1874 picture. I don't know if Elizabeth married or not but I have a Xmas card signed by Lilatrae and Lizzie that was received about 1894.

Arthur sent a letter to my Grandfather Walter on "Bradbury and Hirsh" (Liverpool) letterhead stationery in January 1894 that accounts for their Mother's estate and the distribution to her heirs. Louisa had apparently died in 1893. There other references to family members. I don't know what kind of business Bradbury and Hirsh were engagaged in but they may have imported minerals or spirits.

Walter married Clara Mertean (Smith) Williams in Deming New Mexico on September 26,1890. She had been previously married and had moved to San Diego CA. in the 1880's. Her Father was a Civil War Vet from Indiana. Walter and Clara's children were: Clara Louise,(b.1892 d.1900); George Harold (b.1893 d.1929); and my Dad Arthur Walter (b.1895 d.1975). My Grandfather Walter died in 1901 and my Grandmother Clara died in 1951. All died in San Diego and are buried in Mt Hope Cementary in San Diego. My Dad and Uncle Harold both served in the U S Marine Corps in World War I.

I am hoping to fill in all the blanks about the Bradbury's in the Liverpool/Birkenhead area in the 1800s and possibly earlier. By the way I believe the Family Crest for our line of Bradbury's features a Boar's Head framed by ostrich feathers with the inscription "Aequitas Actiones Vestras Muniat" that translates "Let Equity Guard your Actions."

Hello, I am trying to trace my ancestors who originally came from Staffordshire, Birmingham, England. It is the family called Horace Bradbury born circa 1870 who married Arabella Ranford in 1890 in Birmingham. They had as far as I know 2 daughters named Ethel Marian Bradury and Florence Hilda Antionette Bradbury. Florence was born circa 1892 and she was my grandmother. She married Richard Chester in 1918. Richard was some years older than Florence. During her youth, Florence Hilda Antionette Bradbury was employed as a governess and I would like to know whether somebody knows where she was employed as a governess during the years circa 1910-1913. Please could somebody tell me how it would be possible to find out where people were employed. Ethel Marian Bradbury married a Bertram Gamble in circa 1910 and I think they moved to the Skegness area to manage a Hotel . Please if anybody has any information at all, can they please contact me. Thank you and best wishes from Angela

Hello, we are looking for relatives and info about Florence Hilda Antoinette Bradbury who was born in the Birmingham area in England in 1892. I am her great-granddaughter (my mum Angela has already left a message). We would love to hear from relatives or any info about her. We are especially interested in info about where she worked as a governess in 1912-1914. And also where she spent the rest of her life after 1932. We think she left Britain around that time but we don't know where she went. At that time she might have travelled under the name Chester. That was her married name but in 1932 her husband had already died and we know that she went somewhere but don't know where. Please get in touch if you have any info. Good luck with your search for relatives. Monica (and Mum Angela)

I have spent quite a long time looking for one of my ancestors, a James David Bradbury (born 1855 died 1878, Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, of typhoid fever aged 23). I have now discovered that his father was actually James Davis (from his marriage certificate) and his mother Elizabeth Bradbury. I presume James D Bradbury was born just before before his parents married. I am now trying to track down details of Elizabeth Bradbury - the person from whom my family takes its name (she married James Davis on 5th August 1855 at Holy Trinity Church, Northwood, Hanley, Stoke on Trent). The marriage certificate names her father as Hamlet Bradbury, a potter, but I can find no trace of him in any census. Elizabeth was of "full age" when she married. I have traced her from her marriage to her death, but cannot find her before 1855. Has anyone else come across these Bradburys and could share information with me? My family history database is available on my web site. Follow links to genealogy.

My grandfather is Eric Blackburn Bradbury, born in Belfast in 1915, two brothers, Jack and Samuel. He had three daughters, Ann, Elizabeth and Valerie, He traced his line back to Wickham Bonhunt, and the Thomas Bradbury who was Lord Mayor of London in 1509-10, and possibly MP in 1496. The Bradburys were sent out to Ireland to quell the restless natives (my father's family) and were sustained by gifts of money from the Essex lot. I think the family originally came from Derbyshire. Can anyone go further back than Thomas, Lord Mayor? His wife left a small field for charitable purposes, now New Bond Street.

I would like to know more about my Bradbury Roots as I am the end of my Dad's line. My Dad was born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1924. His name was Ralph Thomas Bradbury Jr. His Father's name (my Grandpa) was in the Merchant Marines and his name was Ralph Thomas Bradbury Sr. He had several siblings but I only know of my Great Aunt: May Bradbury Robinson, and Great Uncle John Bradbury. I don't know anything about my Great Great Grandfather except that I was told he left the family in Philadelphia and moved out west or to the other Coast. I'm feeling rather lonely as the last of my Dad's lineage and would love to hear of some more family out there. Oh yeah, I had an Uncle Ronald Roy Bradbury and Alvin Dale Bradbury.

My father was Carl Walter Bradbury, born in Eatonton, Georgia around 1894. His siblings were Fred, Louis, Minnie and Ida. He joined the US Army around 1912 & married Bessie Brady, of Baltimore - maybe in 1926. His first child, Betty Carl was born in Nov 1928, I was born Feb 1930 and Mary Louise was born in 1934. He died September 1936, and the Army shipped us back to my mom's family in Maryland. I lost touch with the Bradburys after that, although an Uncle Ola Bradbury often sent us pecans and honey from Georgia. Those are the only Bradburys I know personally, although I think Betty Carl visited with the Georgia relatives a few years back. There is reason to believe that a few of the Georgia Bradburys migrated to TX in the mid-1800s. One James ? Bradbury is mentioned in a family history by OC Fischer. According to the narrative, James was shot by an Apache Indian while driving cattle to his ranch, between Junction and Llano TX. One of the Fischer boys stayed with him through the night to prevent the Apaches from mutilating his body. He's said to be buried in an unmarked grave on the banks of the Llano River.

Does anyone have any more information about this line of Bradburys?

My father was Thomas Bradbury (1918-1997). He was the youngest of nine siblings (five boys, four girls). His mothers parents ran a public house in Bilston, West Midlands and his father was a policman in the same area and that is how they met. I believe that his mothers family originally came from the Cumbria area and their family name was Lindsay, which was subsequently given to boys of the family as a middle name to sustain that family name. After getting wed I believe they moved to Cannock Wood/Rawnsley where the father then became a miner and they had their nine children. Some names are:-Isabella, George, Muriel, Lucy, Ray but that is as many as I know. My father was the last to die in his generation and was estranged from his family later in life when I came along so I would love to know more.

Hello once again - I continue my search for my Bradbury ancestors who moved from Maine/Mass. to Minnesota. My 3rd gr grandmother, Frances Bradbury Varney Fowler (born in Calais Maine) moved from the East Coast about 1850. She married John M. Varney in 1852 in St. Anthony, Ramsey County Minnesoeta. They moved to Montreal where John died in 1860 & Frances went back to MN with her 4 yr old daughter - Georgi - my great grandmother. Her sister, Olive, and husband, WM. Lane also came to Minn. before settling in Iowa abt 1870. I would very much like to re-create the trip from Maine to Minnesota and learn how Frances traveled to Minnesota. She didn't travel with parents or siblings; she must have been one gutsy young lady! Any Minnesota Bradbury's out there? I'd be happy to share what I have learned over the years. Thanks once again. I am researching the Bradbury line. I have alot of patchy info about Bradbury's in england. The earliest name i have is "EDWARD BRADBURY: Edward Bradbury, a railway clerk of Staffordshire England, married (in Staffordshire) Emily Radford (age 21; born 1837), from County Dowd Ireland, whose father was a blacksmith. They had 4 children, Frederick William, Florence Minnie, Emily and Arthur Ernest Edward. EDWARD BRADBURY died after 17 years marriage(roughly 1874). The place and circumstance of death are presently unknown. Emily died in Sydney on the 20th June 1915 aged 78." I have the history of the Bradbury's in Australia from 1883 - present day. The Jones/Bradbury family sailed from Plymouth on the 26th May 1883 on the s.s.Hampshire, a three masted vessel, destined for Brisbane the capital of Queensland, Australia. The Jones/Bradbury family arrived safely in Australia on 31st july 1883. From there, i have records of my line of Bradbury's in Australia right down to me! But what im trying to do is find out who EDWARD BRADBURY's parents were and so on and so forth, etc. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ABOUT EDWARD BRADBURY IN ENGLAND, PLEASE CONTACT ME via email. Hi everyone, I am trying to find out more about my great, great grandfather - Francis Andrews Bradbury. He arrived in Australia on the Chimborazo in Sydney, Australia in 1878 and shortly after joined the NSW Police Force. He later moved to Gunnedah, NSW where he married Emily Chalkley and started a family. His son's birth certificate states that Francis Andrews Bradbury was born in Market Drayton, England. His death certificate states that his father was Francis Andrew Bradbury and his mother Elizabeth Collier although this could be slightly wrong as it was completed by his sister-in-law and several other facts are incorrect. I would really like to find out more about his family in UK and whether any other members of his family emigrated to Australia.

Hi, I'm a Bradbury too! My father James Lyle Bradbury passed away on Oct. 9, 2005 (a handsome 73 year young man). His cousin, Judy Bradbury, has done a extensive work on our ancestory and I will forward her this website. I was feeling like I didn't have many family members, but I think I may be incorrect. Judy lost her father George Bradbury on April 1, 2006 he was a "good" 95! Still a twinkle in his eye. She has told me that it was Fredrick Bradbury who brought us to the USA. Thanks for this webite, don't feel quite as alone.

There is a two fold reason for this post. First, my partner's family hails from Candor Township, Minnesota, Where the homestead is still standing. Although no longer in family ownership, as the owners say, they are care takers. Second my own family crosses paths in the past with the Bradbury's, as there was a female Bradbury who married a Mangas male. My mothers maiden name is Mangas, she was born in Union City Indiana. Which unfortunately is about as far back as we are able to trace, any help would be appreciated. If we can be any assitance with the Bradbury, do not hessitate to ask.

I still am interested in finding someone of the Bradbury line who has information of Thomas Bradbury who emigrated from England to New Jersey in the 1730's. The best lead I have is that he and a brother came over to see what life in the colonies was, with the brother returning and Thomas staying. It is possible that they were from Devonshire. I came across a message from Martin Bradbury, written in October 2000, in which he mentioned that his Grandfather was a Charles Becket Bradbury, and Great grandfather was John Shaw Bradbury from Saddleworth.. Martin used to live in Argentina, but had moved to San Diego, I emailed Martin with address given in 2000 but it was returned as an incorrect address., so I’m writing this in the hope he still reads this message board. I am related to both these Bradbury’s, so would very much like to swap information with Martin or anyone else who recognises these names.

Hello to all Bradbury's out there. My grandmother Alice May BOWES (1909-2004) was born a Bradbury. I am currently trying to find out some more information about her grandfather Harry/Henry Arthur BRADBURY(BRADBERRY) (1849? – 1925). Apparently Harry/Henry came to Australia from London as a 9 year old boy (according to his death certificate) but when, where and how I cannot establish.

He married Sarah Anne WHILSHERE/WHILTSHIRE in Maryborough, Queensland on 28th July 1874. This is only a few days after Sarah arrived in Australia from England aboard the St James. According to family stories they had married on the ship to Australia. Interestingly on the marriage certificate both he and his father are listed as sailors.

Does anyone have some further information or ideas on how this particular Bradbury made it to Australia?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for leads on John Bradbury, who in all censuses states he was born 1804 (poss.1806 on one census) in Disley, Cheshire. He married a Manchester-born lass, Hannah Barrowclough/Butterworth.

Disley parish registers don't reveal him at all. I've searched for possible siblings in the censuses who say they were born in Disley, but none really fit. Maybe his parents/family were only in Disley for a short time, visiting perhaps? The immediate viscinity could take me to New Mills? Marple? Stockport? Further afield? I honestly don't think he had any connection with local big-wig, Jordan Bradbury. Family names and dates don't support this.

Another possible lead suggests John, Hannah and their young family went to and returned from Massachusetts between July 1831 and June 1833, probably via Liverpool. It concerns the birth of their third child, Thomas in about 1833. He was born in Lowell (remember this is a transcription of census handwriting), Massachusetts, America, and classed as a British Subject in the censuses. The family were back by 23 June 1833, because he was baptised then at Manchester Cathedral. His sister, Frances, was born in Salford and baptised at the same place in 1827. A brother who did not survive (?) to be on the 1841 census was baptised in Manchester on 31 July 1831. Could they have travelled with other family members who stayed in the States? Or to meet up with family members already settled? I wonder if the American Bradburys could help me with this lead.

One more vague lead centres around their religiosity. I can't find the marriage of John and Hannah. At the time, it would have had to be registered at Manchester Cathedral (or another parish church) around 1826-27, but it's not even hinted at on the IGI. It could be a transcription ommission, but it could also be that they (also) married at one of the non-conformist churches, probably of the Methodist ilk. Hannah was the granddaughter of a preacher, Samuel Barrowclough, where Methodism also abounded. For information: her father, Jabez Barrowclough, moved to Manchester with her mother Sarah Gaulk from Sowerby, Yorkshire; he died soon after 1814, and her mother married William Butterworth. Hannah's brothers, Samuel and Jabez Barrowclough/Butterworth (they may have adopted their step-father's name) also disappear from the censuses and BMD records after 1851 and may have gone abroad.

I've hit a brick wall, it would seem, with John Bradbury. If anyone can help, I'd be grateful.

Many thanks

Fiona

Neil, I did a search on "Bradbury bank notes" and found the following link to a history of UK Banknotes.
http://xray.sai.msu.ru/~mystery/images/money/UK/UK.html
This says, in part "Bearing the signature of the SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY John Bradbury the pound notes were printed in black and, appearing just one week later, the ten shilling notes were in red. Both notes were the same size and were printed on only one side of paper. It was advisable to have all your notes face upwards before counting. Many found face down, it is said, were thrown away as scrap paper! Thomas De La Rue and Company assisted Waterloo Brothers and Layton to produce the ten shilling note."

Charles Edward Bradbury was born in 1889 in St. Helens, Lancashire. He was the eldest of at least six children.
George Hassell b. 1890; Thomas Henry (Harry) born 1892; Edgar Furness born 1895; Percy Jack born 1898 and Hilda born 1899 all in St Helens, Lancashire.
Charlie’s parents were:
George Bradbury and Helen Hannah (nee Hassell). George was a Public Park Keeper and Helen a Librarian in a Public Library.

I have to thank Joanna Layton for bringing the following to my attention.
A very interesting item about a Bradbury was broadcast yesterday on Radio Four of the B.B.C. in program called ‘Home Truths’ It concerned a English woman who found some very poignant letters written in 1917 hidden in furniture in a house in France. One is from the mother of a Charlie Bradbury, the other her son’s reply.
This is the text from the program which is to be found on the Radio Four website:
“The First World War was of course a great time for words and few are more poignant than those written in letters home. Many letters have found their way in to family history, kept as heirlooms of a terrible time that those alive today can only wonder at. But many letters must have been written and never found their way home, never posted due to the death of the sender, pieces of paper destroyed by shell-fire, never to be read.
Valerie Skinner called David from her home in France to tell him about some very old letters which she discovered after moving into a farmhouse in the Loire Valley.
Valerie now wants to trace this young soldier’s living relatives. His name is Charlie E. Bradbury and his regiment was the West Lancashire Reserves 23 Market Street, Carnarvon, North Wales. His home address was 158 Thatto Heath Road, St. Helens, Lancashire. He had brothers called Harry and Edgar.
Anyone knowing the descendants of Charles E. Bradbury please make contact with the producer of the Radio Four program ‘Home Truths’ (details on website), so these letters can be handed over.

Are there any Fort Kent, Maine Bradbury descendants out there? We descended from the first Thomas, who settled in Massachusetts in 1634. My grandfather (George Record) and father (Kent Fairfield) were born in Fort Kent. The names Kent and Fairfield come from two forts on the Canadian border that were used in the French and Indian wars. I would particularly be interested in hearing from Bradbury's who still live in Maine.

Here is some info about these Bradbury's:

1) My family is descended from the famous French King Charlemagne (4th generation). Less flattering is the fact that Charlemagne‘s great, great grandfather and our earliest known ancestor was Pepin d’Heristal. His concubine’s (Alpaide) son, Duke Charles Martel, started the line from which we are descended. Duke Charles Martel was known as The Hammerer and was born in 689 AD. Pepin’s wife was Plectrude, but she bore him no children. So there you have it, a somewhat questionable ancestry to be sure.

2) My first American ancestor Thomas Bradbury (33rd generation) was born in Wicken Bonant England on February 28,1610. He moved to York, Maine in 1634 and settled in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

3) Thomas’ wife Mary Perkins Bradbury was found guilty of being a witch at the famous Salem Witchcraft trials in 1692 at age 80. Her four codefendant witches were hung in Sept 1692, but Mary was spared for reasons unknown. Mary was found guilty of ‘bewitching’ (literally) John Carr, who became crazed and prematurely died, after she allegedly changed herself into a "blue boar" (this was the witchcraft part). The blue boar then charged John Carr’s horse, which caused it to stumble, as he and his brother William rode on horseback by the Bradbury house at noon on a Sunday afternoon. William testified that the blue boar then suddenly disappeared, which must have been quite a scary thing as shortly thereafter John evidently went crazy and died. William testified that his father George and Thomas Bradbury had had some ‘difference’ thirteen years earlier, which evidently caused Mary to transform herself into this blue boar and then charge the horses starting from her back yard. She was convicted of being a witch, in spite of the testimony of 118 friends, her husband Thomas, and Reverend James Allen that she was a woman of God and definitely not a witch.

It links to Anne Edon (generation #31), who was the Charlemagne descendant that married William Bradbury around 1568. Charlemagne (born in 747, died in 814) was also known as Charles I, King of the Franks and Emperor of the West, Charles the Great, King of France (768-814). He was Holy Roman Emperor in 800. His son Pepin became the King of Italy.

Charlemagne's grandfather (Duke Charles Martel, The Hammerer) defeated the Moslems who were led by Saracens at the battle of Tours in 732. This victory was very critical to future history of Europe as summarized below:

"After Mohammed's death Mohammedanism aspired to become a world power and a universal religion. The weakness of the Byzantine Empire, the unfortunate rivalry between the Greek and Latin Churches, the schisms of Nestorius and Eutyches, the failing power of the Sassanian dynasty of Persia, the lax moral code of the new religion, the power of the sword and of fanaticism, the hope of plunder and the love of conquest — all these factors combined with the genius of the caliphs, the successors of Mohammed, to effect the conquest in considerably less than a century of Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, North Africa, and the South of Spain. The Moslems even crossed the Pyrenees, threatening to stable their horses in St. Peter's at Rome, but were at last defeated by Charles Martel at Tours, in 732, just one hundred years from the death of Mohammed. This defeat arrested their western conquests and saved Europe."
