Hello... I wanted to add my name to the list of others who share the name Bradbury. I am the son of John Wayne Bradbury and Charlotte Frances Wiley. They also had four daughters: Judi, Joyce, Jeanne, and Julia. I have a fair amount of information regarding the Bradbury family who lived in the Ohio Valley region of the U.S. If you are seeking any input please feel free to contact me. I would like to find out more about the Bradbury's who lived in Great Britain prior to settling in the colonies in the mid-1770s. Thanks for the help. - jwb

Hi all the Bradbury's. Nobody seems to have mentioned 'THE BRADBURY'Thats what pound notes were called because they were signed by |John Bradbury who was treasurer. I originate from Stoke on Trent, Penkull, in actual fact. My dad was Jack Bradbury who married Winifred Simpson. My dad had 4 brothers, Tom, Bill, Eric and Ern and 1 sister Phyllis. I have a sister called Lillian, Eric had a son and daughter, Young Eric and Phyllis. Toms Wife was called Millie, Bills wife was Called Dolly, Erics was called Betty, and Ern's was called May. Ern & May had a daughter called Brenda and a son called Neil who, the last I heard, was big into making wooden fireplaces and furniture. They all still live in Staffs somewhere. Oh Yes, Phyllis married Herbert Thomlinson and live in Stoke on Trent. Incidently I was told that Mr bradbury (pound notes) was my g.g.grandfather. Don't know if it's true or not. Happy hunting, Cheerio, adios, adieu, cio, t.t.f.n.
i was following up my maternal family tree, when i found this site, so i thought i'd better share what i know!my gt grandfather was edgar bradbury,(he possibly had siblings named, mary and ellis,) he married hannah hallam and had 3 children, fred dorothy and albert edgar(b.24th nov 1919,died may 1992),albert edgar was my grandfather, he married elsie oldham and had 8 children, one of whom was my mother, i don't have any further information about dates, but i do have some interesting family stories! apparently one of our ancestors worked at erwell hall, and caused a bit of a scandal by getting herself pregnant by the lord of the manor!this resulted in a huge hush up and a small financial payout, which included a wooden highchair, which although it has been cut down into a low chair over the years, is still in our family today, and is also regularly used by my own children. Also my gt uncle fred,(who by the way was decapitated, in a frak car accident!),is reported to have married his own aunty,(mary), they apparently had one daughter, named audrey. T,he entire branch of my tree, that i know of, originates from the glossop/hyde area of north west england, although i myself have always lived in bredbury! So if any of the names or stories are familiar, please feel free to e-mail me, good luck with your searching...thanx jim.

I need some help, I have been trying to find my father's side of my family for a while now, but with minimal results. My father was John James Maloof born 2/23/1945 in Syracuse NY, died on 9/1985 in Chicago, IL. He was born to Edward Joseph Maloof born in 1911 or 1912 in Salem MA died I think in either 1991, or in 1998 in Manatee, FL. and to Grace Louella Bradbury born in 1918 in Cortland NY. I have my father's birth certificate and it claims that Grace Louella had 6 other siblings living at home in 1945 when my father was born, and I would like to find them, but I don't have any of their names because my father was taken away from his mother when he was young from abuse and never seen or heard from her again. Please help me I really would appreciate any information on these people or on how to find these people. Thank You Very Much.
Two items. My greatgrandmother is Berdie Bradbury, descendant of Robert Bradbury, abt. 1390. Berdie married my ggrandfater, Karl Lee Leaming. Parents Jacob Natathial Bradbury and Alice Mitchell. Anyone aware of any Berdie contacts. Second, Why do I come across two versions of Robert Bradbury, son of William Bradbury and Margaret Rokell, abt. 1463. One version give the wife of Robert Bradbury 1426-1489 married to a Anne Wyant while another gives Robert Bradbury 1440-1489 to Jane Fitzwilliam. Am I missing something?
I am looking for information on the Bradbury's from Manchester. Hi there fellow Bradburys. I was born in Epsom, Surrey, England in 1952 and emigrated to Canada in 1987. My family for the last 2 generations hails from the Reading, Berkshire area. My father Harry Ernest Bradbury, born 21 July 1916 had 3 brothers and 2 sisters all of whom now have grandchildren and are dispersed mainly across the south of England. The generation above my father is much more spread out as I understand it. Some are here in Canada, although I don't know where. Some others emigrated to South Africa.
Hello fellow Bradburys, My side of our family has lived in Derby for a few generations now, give me a bell if you need any info on any of us,
Especially to Leona - I'm a bit foggy on my ancestry as my grandparents moved down to the West Country (Barnstable, I think) and then again to Hove in Sussex where I was born. About as far as you can get from the traditional Bradbury hunting grounds!
All I do know is that I am related to Hubert and Kathleen Bradbury (referred to as great uncle and great aunt) of Leicester.
I also heard tell of some relations in Birmingham/the Birmingham area, of whom John Bradbury was said to have all the papers relating to our side of the family, including the family coat of arms - that, I guess, would be with two bucklers and "a fleur-de-lys for difference", as I know I'm not directly related to Baronet Bradbury and his kin who have three bucklers on their shield.
I *think* I also have a relative called Olive Bradbury, in the London area - but that was quite some time ago (decades, not just years).
I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help fill in the gaps.
Best wishes to all
New E-mail address is above. please forward to it

Still looking for help on my Bradbury's. My mother was Claranelle (Nellie Clara) Bradbury b. Oct. 21, 1910 Kansas City, KS. Her father (a mason/plaster worker by trade)was George Amos Bradbury, Born Nov. 15, 1887 in Kansas City, KS. His father was Jefferson Stanley Bradbury b. c. 1863 in IL. His father was Absolem (Absolom) Bradbury, b. c. 1829 in NJ. Looks like Absolem traveled west through Ohio and Illinois into the Kansas City area where he died in 1894. Can anyone give me any help?
I'm researching my great-grandfather and his wfe, namely;
James Parnaby Bradbury , b. ca. 1830 in unknown England, and his wife, Eleanor ? Waring, b. 1850, Stockton-on-Tee's, England. They were believed to have been married at , Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, ca. 1866-1867. Eleanore was reported to have lived with a maternal Aunt ? nee Waring Spencer at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England around 1863-1867.
James Bradbury and his wife, Eleanore, left England from, South Hampton in 1866-1867.
Eleanore's parents assumed died ca. 1863-1867, at Stockton-on-Tees, England. Her father was landlord or owner of a Brewery in Stockton-on-Tees and when he died his Attorney brother, un-named, took over ownership. I would be delighted if you were to pass on any information .
Thank you for your time
Geetings from David Kent Bradbury. These are some things I learned from this website and my copy of the Bradbury Memorial.
1) I am descended from the famous historical French ruler and warrior Charlemagne (4th generation), whose descandants were the Kings/Rulers of France for over 400 years. Somewhat disconcerting to all similar descending Bradbury's is the fact that Charlemagne's great, great grandfather and my earliest known ancestor was Pepin d'Heristal (1st generation). Pepin's concubine Alpaide bore him Duke Charles Martel, which evidently started the line from which I descended. Duke Charles Martel was known as The Hammerer and was born in 689 AD. Pepin's legal wife was Plectrude, but she bore him no children. So there you have it, a somewhat questionable beginning for my ancestry to be sure.
2) My first American ancestor Thomas Bradbury (33rd generation) was born in Wicken Bonant England on February 28,1610. He moved to York, Maine in 1634 and settled in Salisbury Massachusetts. Unfortunately, his wife Mary Perkins Bradbury was found guilty of being a witch at the famous Salem witchcraft trials in 1692 at age 80 no less. Her four codefendant witches were hung in Sept 1692, but Mary was spared for reasons unknown. Mary was found guilty of bewitching (literally) John Carr, who became crazed and prematurely died, after she alleged released a 'blue boar' (whatever that is) from her house. This blue boar allegedly caused John Carr's horse to stumble as he and his brother William rode on horseback in front of the Bradbury house at noon on a Sunday afternoon. William testified that the blue boar then disappeared, which must have been quite a frightful experience as shortly thereafter John went crazy and died. William testified that his father George and the afore mentioned Thomas Bradbury had had some 'difference' thirteen years earlier, which evidently caused Mary to allegedly to release the blue boar from her backyard. She was found guilty of being a witch despite the testimony of 118 friends, her husband Thomas, and the Reverend James Allen who testified that she was a woman of God and not a witch. Talk about a tough justice system!
3) One of my ancestors married Harry S. Truman the President of the United States, who succeeded Franklin Roosevelt. My mother Alina Kaupinen Bradbury worked for Roosevelt's assistant attorney general Judge George Sweeney in Washington DC in the 1930's.
4) I am definitely related to the famous science fiction author Raymond Douglas 'Ray' Bradbury (42nd generation) whose great, great, great grandfather Samuel (37th generation) born in 1760 was also my (43rd generation) great, great, great, great grandfather. I'll leave it to others to figure what 'number' cousin we are and how many times we are 'removed' if at all.
5) I am also related to Ralph Waldo Emerson (39th generation) who descended from the same original American Thomas Bradbury (33rd generation).
6) My 3rd cousin Grover Bradbury, who was my great grandfather Geroge Record Bradbury's 1st cousin and my father Kent Fairfield Bradbury's 2nd cousin, was quite the poet and I have some of his work.
7) Captain Thomas Bradbury (35th generation) fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War. Thank goodness he was not a Tory, as given the other disconcerting info above, at least he was not a 'Benedict Arnold', who by the way did visit the Hessian (Hessians were German mercenaries who fought against bad King George) camp near Hessian Hills (where I grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia) during the Revolutionary War. This was before Arnold sold out and took money from King George, thus betraying General George Washington and other American revolutionaries.
8) I have several Civil War Veteran ancestors, who fought for the Union side. My father Kent Fairfield Bradbury was a lieutenant in the US Navy in WW II in the Mediterranean Sea and was at the landing at Anzio, Italy in 1942. He also served on a destroyer near the end of the Pacific war against the Japanese. My brother Thomas Eliot Bradbury was in the US Army and fought in Vietnam. These Bradbury's have all fought for our country and for that I am very proud.
9) Here is the web site where I found most of this stuff. I found the witch story in the Bradbury Memorial.
I have been trying to trace my Bradbury lineage but only have information back to my gg-grandfather John Bradbury b. 9-12-1849 married to Christiana Kellar. My g-grandfather is William Austie b. 10-7-1881 married to Elma Elizabeth Schooley. My grandmother is Edna Christina Bradbury b. 11-9-1906 married to Jerry Dewey Scott. Any more information would be greatly apperciated as I have recently connected with a second cousin and we would like more information. Thanks

I'm looking for my older half brothers Rhys Edward, John Alistair, Roger Stuart. Our fathers name is Nigel(Tony) Bradbury. They would have been born around 1959-1964 in the UK.

Hello Fellow Bradburys,
Firstly, a big thanks to Jim - what a fantastic job! Everyone who's contributed has spurred me on to dig a little in my Bradbury past. So here goes - it may be a little vague in parts as my branch of the family don't appear to be very adept in the memory department! However, my Great Grandfather was William Bradbury born circa 1860 Warrington, Cheshire, UK. I am told he was well known at the time as he was either Mayor / Alderman, but far more importantly - the Publican at the King & Queen Hotel, Padgate until 1945. My Great Grandmother died when my father (William Desmond) was very young, so apparently her name was 'Grandma'??!! Gt Grandparents had 9 children. They are: William (my grandfather), Leonard, Burt (emigrated to Australia circa 1945 - children John & Judy), Eric (emigrated to Durban, South Africa circa 1945), Harry, Eva, Emma, Violet (emigrated to USA) , and finally Lily. Lily disappeared around 1920 after a row with her father and was never seen again (I've just found this out!). So does anyone know any Lilies?
As you can see, lots of these Bradburys emigrated at separate times to all parts of the world. If any bells start ringing, I'd love to hear from you.
My parents, Bill & Judy, moved from Warrington in the early 60s to Staffordshire (Brewood) where my sister, Penny and myself were born and grew up. My dad Bill, has 2 half siblings from Grandfather Williams 2nd marriage (to Mary). They are Barbara and Brian. Brian married Angela and they have 2 children, Ian and Zoe (who I think now both live in London).
Good luck, everyone,
What a great site. I'm looking for information about the decendants of Eben Clough Bradbury b.1850. His daughter, Susan Alice Bradbury is my paternal Grandmother but I have very little information about her siblings i.e. Jottie C. b. 1893, Hopal Iva b. 1890, Harry Eben b. 1897 and Dorothea Ervine b.1901. Any information you can share on any of these individuals would be very much appreciated.
What a wonderful site. I was very interested in the Bradbury Crest and Motto. Thank you for the amount of time and effort you must put into this.
All Bradbury's in Canada. I know there are a lot of you. I was born in Glace Bay Nova Scotia and my father was Jim Bradbury and he had a brother Joe, Hayward, Jack, Charlie, Gertrude, Florence, Mary, Alice. Anyone know them. I love to hear from you.
Just found this site. Great to see. I find that I'm related to some of the people with messages here. Ruth (below) is my aunt. It would be good to start a "Bradburys in Australia" mailing list or something similar. We also need to get our bradbury family tree on the web. Bye for now.
I was interested to see a message relating to my book "...And One From England" the biography of my husband's grandfather, James Robert Bradbury who arrived in South Australia from England January 1882. James Robert's parents Joseph (b 1825 Bredbury Cheshire) and Frances (nee Davies) Bradbury and his 3 sisters migrated to Australia 6 years later in 1888. Joseph Bradbury (b 1825) was the son of Robert (b 1786 d1866) and Hannah (b1789 d 1856) (nee Bertinshaw) Bradbury, who had 5 sons all born in Bredbury - John (b 1813), William (b 1816) Charles (b 1819), James (b 1822) and Joseph (b 1825). Robert Bradbury (b 1786) was the son of John (b1762) and Ann (nee Ward) Bradbury and his siblings were William (b 1785), Esther (b 1788), Amy (b1790), James (b1792), Mary (1794) and Charles (b 1796) - they were all born at Hyde Cheshire. I am interested to find any details of the descendants of Jonh (b 1813), William (b 1815) and Charles (b 1819). I would also like to find descendants of Mary Alice Bayley nee Downs grand-daughter of James Bradbury (b 1822). Mary Alice had 3 sons Ken, Charles Eric and Frank (killed in WW1 aged 19).
Just found the site by chance. Great to see so much activity. My dad, Stanley (Stan), was born in Godmanchester ,Cambridgeshire, UK in 1929 and had an older brother James, who was a pilot in the RAF died in 1949 at Lossemouth in Scotland. My Grandfather was James Harry Bradbury who came from Stamford, married Florry Stanger from London,UK. Good hunting everyone.
This is an amazing find!Thankyou.Maybe I can discover more about our branch of the Bradbury's now! My grandfather was Jabez George BRADBURY b.1908 New Zealand. He had brothers-Jack,Alexander,Ian/Dean,William,Allan and sisters Marjorie and Jo.They grew up in the Horowhenua area. His parents were John BRADBURY b.Wellington 1873 m. 1906 to Evelyn Amelia CAVEY. John was in the Boer War and returned to farm in Miramar. John's parents were Jabez BRADBURY and Elizabeth HYDE married in 1865 Otago,New Zealand. He was a miner at that time. Do not know where Elizabeth was born. Possibly Jabez came to Victoria,Australia on the "James Baines" in Oct 1855 aged 21. The dates also fit with his parents being John BRADBURY and wife Hannah (unknown maiden name) In this case Jabez would have been christened 6 April 1834 in Salford,CathedralManchester, England and possibly had two sisters-Sarah Ann and Hannah . There were family stories of a cotton mill in England connection. If there is anyone with any connection to any of this or any NZ or Australian Bradbury connection I would love to know! Please email if you can add anything at all! Thankyou.
I am seeking clues to the parents, siblings of Hannah Bradbury, who married Willard F. Scoville, 1853.Place unknown. Any help is appreciated.

Good day to everyone. Hope everyone is having good luck in their searching. I am attempting to locate information on the Bradbury's from Reading England. About all I know concerning them is that my Great-Grandfather, who's name I don't know, lived in Reading and operated a wicker furniture business there. Prior to that he had served in the British military and served in India. His son, Louis Bradbury was killed in April of 1917 during WW1 in France. He was with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces at that time. Take care and have a great day. Kent Bradbury.

Hello! I am from some of the Maine Bradbury's and would like to hear from anyone who may have connections to my family. My grandfather was Francis Wilson Bradbury who was born in Burlington, ME and became a doctor in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. His father was Earl Prince Bradbury also born in Burlington and was later police chief in Brewer as well as a Maine Guide. His father was Albert and his father was Joseph, both from Burlington. Before that there were several generations in Buxton, ME and before that several generations in Salsbury, MA back to Captain Thomas Bradbury. Anyone out there have any interesting info?
This is a long shot but here goes. I have a photo of a cousin called Irene Bradbury taken in 1942 in Oshawa, Ontario. I know she is related to the St. Helens' Bradbury's but don't know who her father is. Would anyone know of this family. I can't get a hold of a city directory there. Thanks a lot. On my last letter I tried to leave my old keeper email but it wouldn't show. I guess it didn't like the brackets. So here it is again. I might have to spell it out as the "at" may affect it too. Thanks, Shelley email@example.com
This note is for Shawna Bradbury. She's an 8th grader who's doing a family tree for a school assignment. Hi Shawna! This is your uncle Barlow. I hope you locate this site and and find it useful. I'm available for questions, just send me an e-mail!
Great site. Thanks for leaving a note on Genforum about it. My BRADBURY's come from St. Helens, Lanc. England as far as I've gotten back. I'd love to hear from anyone. Other names that married into this line are Arrowsmith, Kearsley, Wilkinson, and Barr...and others I haven't discovered yet. I may be getting a new email address soon but I'm keeping an old one
but don't visit it much so keep on trying. Do try this one above first. Shelley
I am interested in any information on my maternal Grandfather, William Francis Bradbury, who was born in Camberwell, London, in 1904, to Reginald Oakford and Ellen (nee Dew) Bradbury. Reginald was a Newsagent. My grandfather married Violet Gibbs, and had 2 children, Patricia and Alan. He worked in the film industry during the war, and then settled in the Salisbury area of Wiltshire as a Publican. Both he and Violet died in 1994. Any information on either William Francis, or his ancestors is much appreciated.
I am looking for information regarding my greatgradfater John Henry Bradbury b. 1870 in England, (maybe Sheffield?). John's father's name also was John, and his mother's name was Charlotte. Charlotte was born in 1825 and died Aug. 9, 1900, and is buried in Intake Cemetary in Sheffield. John H. Bradbury immigrated to the US in the late 1800's or early 1900's where he married Eliza Whitaker. Eliza was also from Sheffield and it has been said that they knew each other prior to coming to the US.

While I am not a Bradbury, I am completing a new, nonfiction book on the Civil War experiences of William H. [Henry] Bradbury, who left his English home (Droylsden area near Manchester) ~1853 for the U.S. with his wife, Mary Ann (nee Hill). I am happy to have stumbled onto this site after years of research and even posting ads in newspapers to find any descendants. He and his family (6 kids) lived in Livingston County, IL until about 1873 and moved to Shawnee County, Kansas. The story is a fine one indeed; just wish I could claim him as an ancestor myself. If other Bradburys are interested in knowing when the book is out (will be pub. by Univ. Press of KY) drop me a note and I'll keep you posted, probably Spring 2002.

I have the name from my father's side. His name was Robert, his father was Bruce. I am not sure of his father but I know he married a woman named McBride. If you know anything about a Bradbury McBride family please contact me. I have always had this name and never thought much about it. The only conection to fame is Ray Bradbury, even though I am obviously not related. I really love this site. Thanks D.Bradbury.
i am looking for information about my grandfather, William Emmett Bradbury, d 1940 in escondido, ca. i believe his father was william edward bradbury and he may have been a local judge. there are 5 new bradburys here: john richard,21, adam clarke, 13, hailley eugenie, 10, nicolas reed, 4, and audrey elanor, 1.
An interesting page! However, as a Bradbury of long standing (and hopefully standing a lot longer!) I was intrigued to see the coat of arms shown as THE Bradbury eschuteon. My brother (who lives in Manchester) and I discovered a Bradbury coat of arms separately. Our findings were similar but neither bears any resemblance to the one shown here. Our shield featured three buckles and a chevron. My design came from a trip to Keddleston Hall in Derbyshire (The Home of the Curzon family). On a Curzon family tree I found reference to the Bradbury family and alongside was the aforementioned arms. Comment? On a totally different subject, in the late 60s our family moved to Bredbury in Cheshire. There was little credence given then to the idea that we originated from there. Personally I just got fed up with teling people I was Barrie Bradbury for Bredbury. On a more positive note, our investigations sugest that our little branch actually came from Durham! Work that one out....
Hi Further to note below, deliberate mistake, my father's cobbler myth in Salford, not Stockport.
Hi I was born in Manchester (or Sale to be exact) in 1962. My father, Norman Bradbury, was also born in Manchester (in the shadow of Manchester City football ground) in 1936 & married Pat White (of Manchester). My brothers are Paul (born Long Eaton, Derbyshire, 1964) and Martin Bradbury (born Wokingham, Berkshire, 1966). Paul has 2 kids, Alex and Lucy. My father's brothers and sisters are Frank, Roy and Hilda - all born in Manchester. (This Frank Bradbury had a son John Bradbury who has a family in the Knutsford, Cheshire area - he'll probably kill me for this!) My grandfather, Frank Bradbury, was born in Manchester too, (in the 1890s I believe) but seems to have attended a school in Wales. He married May Steele (1 May 1896), a seamstress from Horwick, Lancashire. He had one brother, who I believe has a granddaughter also called Fiona. I don't know his name and last heard of in North Wales. My great grandfather Bradbury was a publican/landlord of a pub called the Rose of England which was in Manchester. (I was about 11 years old when, driving through Manchester visiting relatives, my father suddenly slammed on the breaks and realized they had knocked the pub down. I still don't know whereabouts in Manchester we were.) I believe he married a woman called Charlotte. (My father also told a story that this Bradbury's brother was a cobbler in the main street of Stockport, which my father claimed was the exact setting of the film Hobson's Choice starring Charles Laughton) As far as I can tell no mention on the message board has been mentioned of these Bradbury's of the Manchester/Lancashire/Cheshire areas of England. I would be glad to hear from anyone with further information about them.
I am 82 years old, born in New Orleans, LA, as was my father Philip and my grandfather, Victor Jules. Would appreciate and info. Thanks, Vic
Hi everyone.I accidently found this site, and glad that I did,its a brilliant idea!I come from Stoke on Trent (The Potteries) in England.I understand that quite a few people left the potteries in the 18th century for USA,I would be interested if anyone knows of any Bradbury's that went. Also keen to hear from any others too.....feel free to mail me.
I am descended from James Bradbury and wife Eleanor Waring (great grandparents) who emigrated from Newcastle-on-Tyne/Stockton-on-Tees in 1867 to now Portland, Maine. Thanks to employment as bridge foreman for the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad, our family ended up farming west of Spokane Falls, WA. My grandfather George Bradbury homesteaded near Chewelah, WA. My parents and I live in the area. I am specifically in Inchelium on the Colville Indian Reservation on the west shores of Lake Roosevelt (Columbia River). Very rural and isolated with beautiful scenery and nice people. I have visited Australia and plan to return. Wonderful place and people. Also am planning sojourn to Great Britain. I am an architect and I want to take in as much as possible...history and buildings.

I am pleased to see that the Bradburys are so scattered around the World. I would welcome any anything to do with my family history as I am completely new to the Family History game, but can see that it could be addictive. My grandfather was George Bradbury and lived on the Watling Street, Norton Canes in the 1920`s. He had brothers at Brownhills West and that is all I know. Ron Bradbury

What a great website! I've only had my computer a week and am still amazed at all there is to find. I've spent years slogging through genealogy libraries to find information on the Bradburys...and I've found more this morning than I ever thought possible. You are all wonderful to share your research, not everyone is as generous. If anyone has any information on my gggrandmother, Sarah Ann (Bradbury) Doubikin of Australia I would sure appreciate it. She was married to Henry Benjamin Doubikin (date unknown)and had a son (William Samuel)in 1881 in Adelaide. Hope to hear from some one....
